Modern science is finding new interconnections in the natural world, and seeing the human body as “a microbial ecosystem.” Viruses may seem random, like earthquakes, but are more like hurricanes, increasing in frequency and power as humans degrade environments. We must honor “the worldwide ecological networks that bind us together.”

Kate Brown, MIT professor of science, technology and society studies “large-scale disasters and modernist wastelands where history, science, technology, and bio-politic merge.”  She has four books, the most recent, A Manual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future, 2019.
