In the midst of terrible despair we have a chance to “rethink the doomsday machine we have built. Nothing could be worse than a return to normality.” The pandemic is a portal, a gateway we can choose to walk through, “dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, avarice, data banks and dead ideas, dead rivers and smoky skies. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.”

Arundhati Roy is an Indian writer and a political activist, author of The God of Small Things (1997) and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness (2017), along with several other novels and works of nonfiction.
