In the flow of rupture | May
On Monday May 19, CUHF member Tom Murphy offered a brief reflection from his remarkable perspective on—and deep engagement with—astrophysics to begin the second session of the 2025 Council series, In the flow of rupture.
Initially launched over two sessions in February/March 2025 as On the rim of rupture, In the flow of rupture is a continuation of the series, offering ongoing opportunities for reflection among CUHF community members in the wake of upheaval created by the current U.S. administration. In sessions meeting every six weeks (with optional pop-up sessions in-between), we ask:
What is happening, and how do we stay present, compassionate, grounded and in community amidst the convulsions? Can we together expand our insight and perspective, while being realistic, agile, skillful and of service?
Tom’s video series, Metastatic Modernity is among the resources CUHF has shared to support In the flow of rupture in 2025. See the homepage of our site for more.
About the speaker
Tom Murphy
Tom Murphy recently truncated his career as an astrophysicist, retiring from UC San Diego. His journey away from academia started with exploration of biophysical limits to growth (e.g., energy, materials, economies), ultimately becoming more ecologically focused and recognizing modernity as a brief and patently unsustainable blip in the evolutionary history of life on Earth. Astrophysical perspectives on space and time helped expose the deluded and destructive mythologies of our culture, opening space to value what time-tested wisdom the community of life has to offer regarding how to live on this planet.
