A new Earth conversation

CUHF AFFILIATE

A new Earth conversation, a transformative curriculum initiative for these times, grew out of Councils held with Clark University faculty and staff starting in 2015; the program commenced in 2017. The NEC has encouraged a collective process of inquiry, listening, discernment and engagement, allowing new levels of awareness, insight and community-building.

Founded by Sarah Buie (CUHF Founding Convener), Ellen Foley, Amy Richter and a large faculty steering committee, it has been led consecutively by Sarah Buie, Ellen Foley and Denise Humphreys Bebbington.

Consortium of Environmental Philosophers

The Consortium of Environmental Philosophers (CEP) is a non-partisan, independent deliberative network of professionals working in the environmental humanities. Its members come from a range of disciplines, backgrounds and cultures. CUP members work together supportively and inclusively to advocate for the importance of proper scrutiny of the ideas that shape our relationship to other species, natural systems and environments, and our own biology.

Pauline Phemister and Kathleen Dean Moore are members of CEP and of the CUHF Edinburgh Council and the National Council, respectively.

Field Notes: Teaching Climate Change in Higher Education

Award-winning blog featuring interviews and musings from a study about what academic faculty know, think, feel, and do about the climate crisis.

Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT

The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT seeks to advance science journalism in the public interest by nurturing and enhancing the ability of journalists to accurately and thoughtfully illuminate science and its intersection with human culture. Launched in 1983, the program is among the most distinguished journalism fellowships in the world, housed in MIT’s acclaimed Program in Science, Technology, and Society, located in the MIT School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

Deborah Blum is Director of the Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT and a member of the CUHF Journalists & Writers Council.

Mexico Climate Justice Collaborative

Funded by a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation, researchers from Clark University—in IDCE, Geography and Becker School—are collaborating with local communities, policy makers, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The project combines GIS mapping, system dynamics modeling, extended reality (XR) technology, and new educational experiences, to help policymakers and the public collectively understand how much is at stake under climate change.

Tim Downs is Professor in IDCE at Clark University and the grant’s principal investigator. He is a member of the CUHF Partnership Council.

MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative

Founded in 2014, the Environmental Solutions Initiative (ESI) is MIT’s institute-wide effort to mobilize the substantial scientific, engineering, policy, and design capacity of our community to contribute to addressing climate change and other environmental challenges of global import. We pursue multidisciplinary research, education, events, and partnerships to help move society toward an environmentally and socially sustainable future.

John Fernandez is the Director, Laur Hesse Fisher is the Program Director, and Scott Odell is a Visiting Scientist at ESI. All are members of the CUHF MIT Council.

By utilizing the campus as a testbed and incubator, the MIT Office of Sustainability (MITOS) aims to transform the campus into a powerful model that generates new and proven ways of responding to the challenges of our changing planet.

Mitchell Center, University of Maine

The Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions has been a leader in launching and supporting partnerships in which interdisciplinary teams of students and faculty from universities and colleges throughout the state collaborate with diverse stakeholders to tackle and help find solutions to a wide range of urgent sustainability challenges that directly benefit Maine and other regions.

David Hart is the Director of the Mitchell Center and a member of the CUHF Rando 1 Council.

The Spring Creek Project

The Spring Creek Project brings together the practical wisdom of environmental science, the clarity of philosophy, and the transformational power of the written word and the arts to envision and inspire just and joyous relations with the planet and with one another.

Kathleen Dean Moore is a Senior Fellow with the Spring Creek Project and a member of the CUHF National Council and the CUHF Journalists & Writers Council.

SERC, UC Berkeley

The Student Environmental Resource Center at UC Berkeley (SERC) cultivates a collaborative space to strengthen the collective effectiveness of the sustainability community, and provides resources for students to actualize their visions of a more equitable, socially just, and resilient future.

Sharon Daraphonhdeth is the Director at SERC and a member of the CUHF Bay Area Council.

Stanford Energy System Innovations

The cutting-edge energy supply system known as the Stanford Energy System Innovations (SESI) project, undertakes extensive action to reduce energy use in academic and administrative buildings through conservation, improved efficiency, and renewable power generation. Stanford’s suite of energy-saving programs target large-scale building retrofits, small-scale retrofits, including heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) controls, as well as user programs.

Lincoln Bleavens is the head of sustainability and energy management at Stanford University and a member of the CUHF Rando 2 Council. Aurora Winslade is the Director of the Office of Sustainability at Stanford and a member of the CUHF Swarthmore Council.

Swarthmore ChesterSemester Fellowship

Through the ChesterSemester Fellowship, Swarthmore students work alongside Chester PA city partners in volunteer-based internships focused on social and environmental justice. The program facilitates committed student engagement with visionary leaders in the city in order to critically understand, and help to ameliorate, some of society’s most pressing problems.

Mark Wallace is a Professor of Religion at Swarthmore and Co-Director of ChesterSemester. He is a member of the CUHF Swarthmore Council.

Swarthmore Globalization, Environment & Society Program

The Globalization, Environment & Society Program, established in 2003, offers students of Macalester, Pomona, and Swarthmore Colleges the opportunity to study the environment and complex, multi-cultural society of South Africa against a background of globalization and rapid technological change. The program takes place at the University of Cape Town, a world-class institution where professors have developed a curriculum of focused study, in collaboration with the environmental studies faculty of these three liberal arts colleges.

University of California Sustainability Office

Since the opening of its first campus in 1868, the University of California system has been committed to responsible stewardship of its resources and education and innovation for the public good. Today, its 10 campuses and five medical centers are nationally recognized living laboratories of sustainability.

Matt St. Clair is the Chief Sustainability Officer at the University of California Office of the President and a member of the CUHF Rando 2 Council.

The Wellesley Buddhist Community

The Wellesley Buddhist Community welcomes everyone to participate directly in mindfulness and meditation practice and experience the effects in their own lives—encouraging regular practice, openness, kindness and gentleness with ourselves and others to help develop resilience, buoyancy, and a culture of gratitude and loving kindness in the Wellesley Community.

John Bailes is the Buddhist Chaplain at Wellesley College, and is a member of the CUHF Eco-Sattva 2 Council as well as a CUHF National Convener.

Wellesley College Paulson Initiative

The Paulson Ecology of Place Initiative inspires and prepares Wellesley College students across disciplines to engage with their natural environment and develop a sense of place on our iconic campus to enrich their academic experience, well-being, and community, and become change agents who cultivate sustainable landscapes and communities around the globe.

Suzanne Langridge is the Director of Wellesley’s Paulson Initiative and a member of the CUHF Clark Partnership Council.

Yale Forum on Religion & Ecology

Based at Yale University’s School of the Environment, The Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology is an international multireligious project contributing to a new academic field and an engaged moral force of religious environmentalism. With its conferences, publications, monthly newsletter, and website, it explores religious worldviews, texts, and ethics in order to contribute to environmental solutions along with science, policy, law, economics, and appropriate technology.
