The pandemic is but one symptom of human ecological dysfunction, with the prospect of economic implosion close at hand. Rapid population growth is destroying the conditions that support life. All economic planning must now turn to ensuring that humanity can thrive indefinitely and more equitably within the biophysical limits of nature, with more economic diversity at the local level.


William E. Rees, professor emeritus of human ecology and ecological economics at the University of British Columbia, is co-inventor of the concept of an ecological carbon footprint.
